A grunt escaped him as he listened to the young girl’s voice; though he was not exactly listening to what she was saying - it’s not that he was trying to be insolent, it was that his attention was elsewhere - trapped in his thoughts, as usual. His hand dug through the bag on his back, eyes scanning over the different items that he shuffled through and then he could literally feel the sinking in his chest as his hands gripped a particular picture, one that had been buried deep down for a reason.

                            –a picture of himself and a small female.

A flash back to that day came, his vision gone weary – it was dark out, panic was filled inside him and Tommy as they tried to make their way out of the town alive. They had no idea what was happening but they knew nothing good would come of it. He could almost see the exit. They were almost at the end of the trail–

                                        and then everything went dark.
                                        A shot fired. Who had been hit?
                                        A glance over and he confirmed
                                        Tommy was fine. He also hadn’t
                                        been hit. Or maybe he had,
                                        he couldn’t tell.

            and then..

                                  no.
                                             No, no, no.

       She was in his arms,
       he wouldn’t let her go.
       Not this time. No, she
       couldn’t leave him.

                                            “Daddy..”

                  “You’re gonna be okay, baby.
                        Stay with me.”

                                       And then–

            …
                   silence.

       No, this wasn’t happening.
              Her frail body laid limp in his arms,
                  what little life was there had gone.

         “Baby..”

                       “Don’t do this to me, baby girl.”

Right then, he could physically feel his world slipping right from his hands. His fingers gripped the fabric of her pajamas, his eyes looked into hers that showcased a lifeless feeling. It was that night that Joel knew his life would never be the same.
